Carpal tunnel syndrome is a surprisingly common condition that can affect people from all walks of life. Referred to often as CTS it has a few different symptoms. What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel syndrome is caused by the compression of the median nerve. This nerve controls movement and sensation in the hand. Certain things can put you more at risk of Carpal Tunnel syndrome. Pregnancy for example can increase the risk of Carpal Tunnel syndrome. There are hereditary components. If someone in your family developed it, you could be more at risk of developing it. Repetitive use of the hands, for example at a job or sport, where repetitive movements are required or use of a bike / computer. Although Carpal Tunnel syndrome affects people of all ages, you are more likely to develop it, the older you get.

Advice For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:

You can try heat over the forearms. If the muscles are warm or swollen then ice is more suitable. Gentle mobility exercises. Non steroidal anti inflammatory and /or painkilling drugs. Regular breaks from repetitive activities or computer use.

Long-Term Care For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:

Reduction of overuse of the area.

Improve movement in the elbow, shoulder, neck (cervical), Middle back (thoracic spine)

Strengthening the muscles in the shoulder and arm. Then slowly improving strength in the local wrist and hand.

Ergonomic (desk / working area set), Sleeping position.
